Nightstand 2.0

June 1, 2012

Our new neighbors have been so generous to us. They are the kind of neighbors everybody wants, but one so rarely gets. They are in the process of redecorating their bedroom and they’ve been getting rid of some of the old stuff. Two of the things they replaced were their solid oak nightstands. They offered them to us, since they were just planning on taking them to the garbage and I immediately said yes. How could they throw them out?! I’ll rescue them!

They were unfinished for the most part, which made them perfect for painting and doing some things I wanted to do. Here’s the before:

I won’t bore you with a thousand shots of me painting wood, but I will share my one brilliant idea on how to paint the stubby legs without getting paint all over the floor. Behold my genius – plastic cups:

This idea is probably all over Pinterest or some other famous DIY blog, but I was proud of myself when I thought of it.

I did splurge a little on the knobs. I wanted a bit of a glamour look with these. I looked at the “crystal” knobs at Home Depot but they looked cheap – super cheap. So I bought some nice glass ones at a hardware store near my work. They really finished up the look and the nightstands turned out beautifully. Here’s the finished product:

And here’s a side by side that I’m going to pin to my DIM board:

I really like that you left the top dark. They turned out really nice.

Don’t show your neighbors – they will want them back! So cute!
